Why Being Made?

Hebrews 10:14 has been one of my favorite verses for many years. I believe that it is one of the most succinct explanations of salvation and our identity in Christ. When the verse says, "For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy" it is not simply sharing a nice platitude. Rather, it is concisely sharing the truth that Christ died on the cross once for sin. He will never again die.

His sacrifice was sufficient to make us perfect if we are willing to admit that we have sinned, are in need of a Savior, and surrender to him as Lord. This perfection is not sinless perfection in our behavior.

However, in our identity, in our soul and spirit, we have been perfected. We are seated in heavenly places with him (Ephesians 2:6).We are complete in him (Colossians 2:9-10). We are holy (Hebrews 3:1). We are fellow citizens and saints (Ephesians 2:19).

Our behavior is catching up to the reality of our new identity. How freeing is it to understand that we are no longer sinners who can't help sinning, but rather saints who sometimes make the deliberate choice to sin? We are no longer under the law, trying our hardest to make please God. Rather, we are under grace - the very empowerment that enables us to resist temptation and live a holy life - not a license to sin. We have been given all of the tools that we need in order to be victorious and live an abundant life. This truth, that we are the very righteousness of God, has been revolutionary in my own life. I pray that it transforms yours as well. You will find a number of resources on this site that will (hopefully) help you further your journey to spiritual maturity.

In addition to the spiritual application, the idea of "being made" is a fact of life we encounter on a daily basis. We are all in the process of growing, changing, and choosing everyday. What we are "made" into will be informed by where we invest our time, money, and hearts. I want what I am "made" into to reflect the heart of my Heavenly Father and his goals for my life. We have a great deal of control over what we are "being made" into, and we must direct our hearts to truth if we are to be conformed to his image.
